I updated using the Jas 10.5.3 combo update and no problems to report. I did have to replace the audio kexts for sound. Now in my case it didn't update the kernel, so I exacted the 9.3 kernel from the apple combo update and then replaced the old 9.2.2 kernel with the new 9.3.0 via kext helper and the reboot.

Here is my update on my situation: Took macbook to genius bar. Explained problem.
I don't think they really understood it. They took the computer and replaced a fan. I took it back home and tried it out. It was no different, no cpu usage, hot cpu and loud fan.
Seems the fan replacement was pointless. Too bad they didn't try the computer after replacement to see if it helped. Anyway, I remember the genius guy mentioned that doing a PRAM reset was a good idea, but he didn't actually try it there. Just tried that now and currently things are back to normal. Cool cpu, slow and silent fan. We'll see if it lasts. To reset pram hold cmd-option-p-r right after you turn on the computer and hold until it restarts again.
I now hear the usual 'cpu whine' again, which seems to indicate the the power management is properly throttling the cpu. I'm guessing this was the problem before, cpu was just running at full speed all the time, using a bunch of power and getting hot. Porkchop dclown wrote: EIther that, or the GPU is busy. Question: Do either of you remember if the Energy Savings preferences is supposed to have a 'reduce CPU performance' check box anymore? I know it does for PPC chips, but I can't remember if it does for Intel chips.
According to a temperature monitor the CPU itself is the hottest component. In my case it is running at 180.F (82.C).

A friend told me that he thinks the 'reduce CPU' option went away with Intel chips. (I was looking for it too.) Edit: clarify. Apple Footer.
